Potty Training 101--Lesson 1: The Push

2 year old girl: "I haf poo-poo, Mommy."

Me: "Really? {checking diaper} No, no poo-poo in there. Do you need to poo-poo in the potty?"

2 year old: {giggling and nodding} "Yes, poo-poo in da poooottttyy!"

Me: "Okay, let's go!"

We march upstairs, pull out the potty that doubles as a step stool, open it up and the two year old acends the mini-throne while I perch on the big one {lid down!}

4 year old girl, upon entering bathroom: "Is she going to the potty?"

Me: "Yes, she is, but let's not distract her. Just sit here quietly with me."

2 year old: {smiling, but no progress}

Me: "Do you feel the poo-poo coming out?"

2 yeard old: "uh-huh"

Me: {checking} "Nope, not yet. Keep trying."

2 year old: {silence}

Me: "Sometimes you have to push...like this--{mimicking 'the push' with a scrunched up face and a little grunt}."

4 year old: "Yeah, you have to push. Push like when you push a baby out, right Mommy?"

Me: {stunned} "Yes........that's......right."

2 year old: "Okay, I push!"
